I never wondered before because sometimes I have watched documentaries on the Second World War and just gone with whatever the commentator is saying, but on D Day and days after no U-Boats attacked the huge fleet.
Commodore Johnnie Walker is a folk hero in Liverpool. He had been interested in submarines since World War One and there was nothing he didn’t know about their capabilities and tactics. Due for retirement in 1939 he started convoy duty and his tactics in fighting them were taught to the Americans. His flotilla was hugely successful against them and in the days of D-Day and beyond he was in charge of the boats defending the invasions fleet. Of the 17 remaining U Boats not one got through and several were sunk.
I take my hat off to the man who gave everything in a very stressful situation when an entire country and the progress of the war lay on his shoulders many times. He died shortly after 1946.
