Land Rights

Posted on 07/12/2010 by admin

There is a movement in the UK as yet small but showing promise because it works, to encourage landowners to let out some land at a small or no fee, to people who want to have well run and productive allotments. The idea of empowering people to grow their own varieties of food, to get them out into the open connecting with the seasons instead of only knowing its winter when the TV puts on Christmas specials, is a very good one.

What will kill this idea is the fact that it is in actual fact a political movement although it doesn’t realise it. For the ownership of land and the enshrining of that ownership in Law, is the entirety of nations and the power of the ruling classes. To chip away at that will bring a back-lash especially as everyone who has ever wielded power knows it is easier to keep something away from the population by way of a right that doesn’t exist, than to ever take away a right once given.

As someone who doesn’t believe anyone should own more than their garden and that all food should be free, this movement interests me and I would like to see more people growing food and understanding what stewardship is and how much more important it is as a reality than the concept of ownership.

I hope it grows:)
