\nJust before spring or after winter\u2019s
\nRetreat back into the earth –
\nOur beginning and our end –
\nYou would understand this –
\nThis sudden sadness and lack of will –
\nWhen my body feels full-up with stones –
\nThe bricks and mortar of a soul
\nHeavy with old places and faces;
\nNot to be loved again –
\nYou would understand how –
\nHow to fly across the rain
\nTo a burning sun –
\nHow to laugh wine out of green bottles
\nAnd break glasses into thousands
\nAnd thousands of happy pieces.
\nYou would understand now –
\nAll you refused to need before –
\nBefore the floors were swept
\nWith new bright brooms and our rooms
\nWere changed, our furniture sold
\nAnd out hearts broken because hearts
