{"id":2010,"date":"2012-01-11T17:36:41","date_gmt":"2012-01-11T17:36:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nanavati.eu\/weblog\/?p=2010"},"modified":"2012-01-11T17:36:41","modified_gmt":"2012-01-11T17:36:41","slug":"percy-bysshe-shelley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/daniel.footstepsbooks.com\/index.php\/2012\/01\/11\/percy-bysshe-shelley\/","title":{"rendered":"Percy Bysshe Shelley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ode to a Skylark<\/p>\n<p>Hail to thee, blithe Spirit!<br \/>\nBird thou never wert &#8211;<br \/>\nThat from Heaven or near it<br \/>\nPourest thy full heart<br \/>\nIn profuse strains of unpremeditated art.<\/p>\n<p>Higher still and higher<br \/>\nFrom the earth thou springest,<br \/>\nLike a cloud of fire;<br \/>\nThe blue deep thou wingest,<br \/>\nAnd singing still dost soar, and soaring ever singest.<\/p>\n<p>In the golden lightning<br \/>\nOf the sunken sun,<br \/>\nO&#8217;er which clouds are bright&#8217;ning,<br \/>\nThou dost float and run,<br \/>\nLike an unbodied joy whose race is just begun.<\/p>\n<p>The pale purple even<br \/>\nMelts around thy flight;<br \/>\nLike a star of Heaven,<br \/>\nIn the broad daylight<br \/>\nThou art unseen, but yet I hear thy shrill delight &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Keen as are the arrows<br \/>\nOf that silver sphere<br \/>\nWhose intense lamp narrows<br \/>\nIn the white dawn clear,<br \/>\nUntil we hardly see, we feel that it is there.<\/p>\n<p>All the earth and air<br \/>\nWith thy voice is loud,<br \/>\nAs, when night is bare,<br \/>\nFrom one lonely cloud<br \/>\nThe moon rains out her beams, and Heaven is overflowed.<\/p>\n<p>What thou art we know not;<br \/>\nWhat is most like thee?<br \/>\nFrom rainbow clouds there flow not<br \/>\nDrops so bright to see,<br \/>\nAs from thy presence showers a rain of melody: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Like a Poet hidden<br \/>\nIn the light of thought,<br \/>\nSinging hymns unbidden,<br \/>\nTill the world is wrought<br \/>\nTo sympathy with hopes and fears it heeded not:<\/p>\n<p>Like a high-born maiden<br \/>\nIn a palace-tower,<br \/>\nSoothing her love-laden<br \/>\nSoul in secret hour<br \/>\nWith music sweet as love, which overflows her bower:<\/p>\n<p>Like a glow-worm golden<br \/>\nIn a dell of dew,<br \/>\nScattering unbeholden<br \/>\nIts a\u00ebrial hue<br \/>\nAmong the flowers and grass which screen it from the view:<\/p>\n<p>Like a rose embowered<br \/>\nIn its own green leaves,<br \/>\nBy warm winds deflowered,<br \/>\nTill the scent it gives<br \/>\nMakes faint with too much sweet these heavy-wing\u00e9d thieves:<\/p>\n<p>Sound of vernal showers<br \/>\nOn the twinkling grass,<br \/>\nRain-awakened flowers &#8211;<br \/>\nAll that ever was<br \/>\nJoyous and clear and fresh &#8211; thy music doth surpass.<\/p>\n<p>Teach us, Sprite or Bird,<br \/>\nWhat sweet thoughts are thine:<br \/>\nI have never heard<br \/>\nPraise of love or wine<br \/>\nThat panted forth a flood of rapture so divine.<\/p>\n<p>Chorus hymeneal,<br \/>\nOr triumphal chant,<br \/>\nMatched with thine would be all<br \/>\nbut an empty vaunt &#8211;<br \/>\nA thing wherein we feel there is some hidden want.<\/p>\n<p>What objects are the fountains<br \/>\nOf thy happy strain?<br \/>\nWhat fields, or waves, or mountains?<br \/>\nWhat shapes of sky or plain?<br \/>\nWhat love of thine own kind? what ignorance of pain?<\/p>\n<p>With thy clear keen joyance<br \/>\nLanguor cannot be:<br \/>\nShadow of annoyance<br \/>\nNever came near thee:<br \/>\nThou lovest, but ne&#8217;er knew love&#8217;s sad satiety.<\/p>\n<p>Waking or asleep,<br \/>\nThou of death must deem<br \/>\nThings more true and deep<br \/>\nThan we mortals dream,<br \/>\nOr how could thy notes flow in such a crystal stream?<\/p>\n<p>We look before and after,<br \/>\nAnd pine for what is not:<br \/>\nOur sincerest laughter<br \/>\nWith some pain is fraught;<br \/>\nOur sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, if we could scorn<br \/>\nHate and pride and fear,<br \/>\nIf we were things born<br \/>\nNot to shed a tear,<br \/>\nI know not how thy joy we ever should come near.<\/p>\n<p>Better than all measures<br \/>\nOf delightful sound,<br \/>\nBetter than all treasures<br \/>\nThat in books are found,<br \/>\nThy skill to poet were, thou scorner of the ground!<\/p>\n<p>Teach me half the gladness<br \/>\nThat thy brain must know;<br \/>\nSuch harmonious madness<br \/>\nFrom my lips would flow,<br \/>\nThe world should listen then, as I am listening now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ode to a Skylark Hail to thee, blithe Spirit!
