So a Klimt has sold for £180.000.000 and I am sure most artists are underwhelmed. it is another exhibition of how the superrich enjoy art as an investment. Looted by the Nazis and displayed by Leonard A Lauder its history is part of its appeal but for artists today who tomorrow will fetch such sums but today can’t even afford their own home it is a bitter pill to swallow. Is this what we applaud in capitalism? Culture no more than a plaything? Is this how wen treat our artists? It isn’t civilized.
