I recall writing an essay and attending a lecture on Kant’s Categorical Imperative, an attempt to give a non-religious framework to ethical decision making. I knew at once it was unworkable but I did think that he understood what may be obvious but needs elucidating: that all ethical conversations begin and end inside one’s head. Why it is crucial to understand this is because it is the entire rationale of religions to give people the rules they should dun through when faced with an ethical dilemma. These rules are being challenged in every generation,; challenged and changed. So one is forced to ask if ethical considerations can change – what exactly are ethical considerations? Just fashion? or the evolution of human thinking?
