Over thousands of years people have had questions and few answers – what is lightning? floods? earthquakes? – and the natural sense of powerlessness in the face of such has led people to be susceptible to anyone who claims they have the answers. Those people started the history of human and animal sacrifice, the idea of dark magic in others, evil spirits and this terrible idea that these things happen because we are somehow at fault in the eyes of our gods. Gods too are just an invention of human frailty in the face of certain death.
You can see these things to day in people who gain influence: their personality, facial features, eyes and thoughts impress upon people their individuality which gives them a direct line to answers. But really those providing the answers were as much in the dark as anyone else, they just delighted in the power they had over others. Exactly like today.
