Culture has been under attack for decades from the money-men wanting to make art a part of their investments and not caring a damn about the place of the visual experience and enjoyment of skill and vision among the general population. They have run rough-shod over peoples’ image of themselves as a country and in so doing millions have lost an idea of what it means to be an American or a Brit. My great aunt had a print of Constables’ Haywain above her mantlepiece because that, to her, was the England she loved. You will never find a print of The Bed in a single council flat in this country because that is not England.
That is the rich men’s’ plaything.
