The Quality of Mercy

Posted on 20/11/2024 by Daniel

There is a cadence in war where each side wants absolute victory. In the past this had led to such things as the utter destruction of Hittite cities and the seeding of the land in and around Carthage with salt to the complete victory doctrine of World War 2 against the Nazis. Against this war aim we have the theories of the just war which puts limitations on victors talking of proportionality and combatants. But we have to note even today the arguments are not settled.

Peoples, for whatever reason, have engaged in war with complete commitment and still do. They denigrate their enemies, they have traditional enemies and they do not see murder as a limitation upon warring. Every country experiences this and every human being is responsible for giving into it or not.
