I drove a lady for a respite lunch this afternoon and chatted to her about her life. She had lived all over the world with her accountant husband and neither of them can remember much about it. I tried to ask her what she thought of Paris, how she found India but she was unable to recall anything worth saying. I don’t know which dementia she has but while this is a cruel disease for families to witness, both these people are aware of their forgetfulness and both take comfort in small victories.
The husband today remembered the letter my name begins with and he smiled when I said ‘yes’. It seems that if we don’t write things down we truly are lost.
