Most research done by the public these days is a matter of reading one or two articles or watching one or two videos they find. They don’t do much more research on those writing or talking than reading the cv on the site. They don’t then write to a leading academic in the field to put forward their conclusions and ask them to comment (which will always elicit a reading list sent by the secretary to the faculty) and they don’t take notes on the main points put forward in their reading.
In other words it isn’t a learning exercise but a discovery of what it is one should learn before commenting. And if you are peered reviewed in places where the readers already agree with you … it isn’t even that much.
