Changing Times

Posted on 28/09/2024 by Daniel

When I had my interview for university I was asked in my recent reading what surprised me most. When I answered I was asked what I thought about the fact that other writers took a contrary view of what had surprised me and I said I thought there might be and if I were to write about it I would have to read both points of view and make my own decision. I don’t think that obvious point made a difference but I was accepted to study. Today is wholly different.

Today I read online the most perverse statements which I can ignore but there are many that purport to be reasonable. If true they carry a heavy burden in many strands of modern societies. Sometimes no contrary position is immediately found and time has to pass before a rounder position may be taken. In this interim period mendacity is king because there is no peer review for online statements. The old adage ‘believe half of what yo read and nothing of what you hear’ has suddenly gained more relevance.
