All war is vile and barbaric. There should be no wars, no armies no weapons and no arms industry anywhere in the world. Every reason for ever going ton war (not going to defence) have been bad reasons or at best never any good reasons.
Yet there is no history without brutal conflict. This is what we are as a species. Men love war and women love warriors. We cannot subtract the warring nature of our games, of our politics or of our legal systems nor can we sidestep how quickly people will fall into enmity with neighbours and each other. All wars dovetail into each other as all empires do.
Since this is our nature we are duty bound to understand that lying is a part of strategy, that shouting loudly is only there to stifle debate and that we will do anything and say anything in order to ‘win’. Because we have no sophisticated definitions of what winning actually looks like.
