much of a man for flower gardens. Pretty bushes and perfumed flowers are pleasant enough but they don’t actually mean much to me. I have always preferred trees and conservation woodlands and in them, the sweet woodland flowers like bluebells and wood anemones are far more lovely to my eyes than any bed of flowering plants.
Not the least because so many of the flowers on sale today are artificial and have never existed in nature. So are some trees, lets be honest, but the money involved in the garden industry is immense while areas of native woodlands are left to rot. Yet a tree is an abundance of life, colour and even usefulness. There are some 400 known uses for hazel wood, though there is little call for using them for thatch roofing these days. It would be far better for the country and the climate is all the fine estates were made entirely into woodlands.
