In the shortest possible definition I can see it is another name for evolution. Apparently the people who promote it say it is an argument for god creating everything 6 thousand years ago, But in essence it says that everything that lives fits perfectly into its natural place. That is exactly how evolution works. And the people who propound intelligent design do so because they assume evolution means there is no god. But that is not what evolution means. At most evolution can be described as the mechanisms by which the universe and life is measured.
It is not actually a godless system because it never set out to be a definition of religious or divine expectations. It merely shows how everything fits into its natural place.
