The Age of Immediacy

Posted on 13/04/202413/04/2024 by Daniel

I have been chosen this year to take part in a statistical programme related to the governance of the UK. Every three months I am asked a series of questions about myself (my demographic) and my thoughts on the country and her institutions. Invite reminders come in the post but the rest is done online.

It occurs to me that this kind of system could be rolled out to say a million people, who weekly response to what government is doing throughout a Parliament. It might even lead to monthly referendums on topics of the moment before legislation is enacted. More importantly it could comment on legislation after it is enacted. Having the people give accurate information would be key but today democracies can achieve this kind of interaction with voters which is far more detailed and useful than waiting for elections or censuses.

I am being given £10 each time I respond – cheap at the price but then I am not very good at selling myself.
