Since the creation of passports the easy travelling from country to country with identity papers and before then, with nothing, has long gone except for the rich. The crossing of the artificial borders we have evolved over thousands of years which, no doubt, will all change again during the millennium, so easy for our ancestors has become not just difficult but for refugees almost impossible.
We talk about ‘one planet’ but actually we don’t live on one planet. The old adage that foreigners ‘come from another planet’ is instructive of the feeling that cultures are so extreme at times they are unbelievable. To many unacceptable. Yet all we do is wholly human.
Maybe we are all waiting for something better.
