I am working for a high-end regional gallery in a lovely spot in Cornwall. It is self-employed work so I agree my days with the director and owner.
This past week we have had a lovely exhibition of ceramics by the British/Egyptian ceramicist Ashraf Hanna. In a city scape the days I have worked would have a steady stream of visitors. But art, it appears, is not the soul reason people go into a regional gallery. It is also by recommendation, by the name of the artist, by what others are buying.
How else do you explain the fact that for three days last week no one visited. Well they did but they came in to see the artist who has the next-door studio. People even popped their heads in and then walked to the other door with not even a look at the show.
