Fairystories

Posted on 11/01/2011 by admin

There is something wonderfully appealing about fairystories. In the anodyne ones we have today the good usually triumph, the princes are often heroes, weddings are always between two people in love and some magical folk exist who are here especially to help humans get things right. It is a way of telling stories that film makers have taken to heart and the film going public love the romantic comedy, the action hero, the thriller where the bad things never quite happen the way the bad people plan them.

So powerful are the themes of fairystories they have existed throughout our history, running counter to the way we see life working they hold out an imaginative promise that things not only could be better, there are those who can make them better for us. If we are wise, quick witted or just plain good, there are places where we can fit in.

It is necessary for us to have them for the world of the everyday is often vile, very brutal, the good get punished and those who do wicked things excel. Since there is little counter balance in the real world to these things we have a made-up world from our childhoods waiting for us to feed our need to believe in something better.

I suspect from that need will come the ideas that will eventually help the human race to make the real world a little kinder but it is a long way off yet.
