One of the problems with POD (publish on demand) is the inability to watch the quality of the books being posted out to readers. I just had a book sent to the writer as a proof – a perfect bound paperback. The glue was uneven on the spine and pages fell out on opening. Absolutely unacceptable. But this may happen all the time and who would know unless bad reviews popped up at Waterstones – good book shame about the loose pages all over the floor. We have complained, of course, but apart from that there is nothing we can do.
