As we welcome home two people who were imprisoned in Afghanistan we should do well to recall how Russia arrests and detains people, how countries around the world will hold people who break the law and how long it takes for the UK to get them out. We would do well to recall that some of these arrests are just because they are westerners, a few are political detainees and some countries kick people out immediately. The taking of hostages in this manner is age-old and debilitating the people involved, difficult for their nations and proof of the arcane laws people are unaware of in countries they work in or visit.
