Shakespeare’s World

Posted on 01/09/2025 by Daniel

It isn’t always as difficult as people make out to read Shakespeare. His world is very different to ours. If you don’t own a horse you walk everywhere so must have strong shoes as there are no tarmacked roads just dirt and Roman stones. No lighting after daytime but firebrands. there was a lot more open land which is both good and dangerous depending on the time and who you were. No steam ships, no planes a lot more animals so in places there was silence and only the sounds of nature. Skinny dipping in summer was a thing. So much was to be discovered spending a lifetime reading and thinking was permissible for the rich. Godlike order was no more cemented into the populace than it is today but everyone disliked the French. No concept of childhood. No statutes on women’s rights or, for that matter, much on men’s rights. Medicine was in its infancy, empire building was getting underway and some men and women wrote glorious poetry as England was being made.
