The attempt down the ages to make us ethical thinkers has never worked on a national scale. There are many reasons for this but one of them is the sheer intensity of the work. To think through one’s every action and interaction to ensure it has the highest quality of ethical outcomes for us, is not something we teach. The amount of intimation we need to make some decisions is widespread and deep. It takes in not just the situation but history and personality, tine and place, and the most obvious thing of all the quality of out information and thinking.
No wonder the majority imbibe their ethics and don’t attempt to generate them themselves.
