There are, of course, several reasons why people become addicted to certain drugs. From my brief experience with my cousin who was a cocaine addict for a decade and a friend who died of an overdose at 18, I can see that very gentle, empathetic people can become addicted. Hard-nosed people may find it more difficult but empathetic people are so beaten up by society and human history and our ability to be indifferent to suffering, they find drugs are a way of forgetting. Separating themselves from those who cause suffering by their ignorance.
They can see that we are the jungle and we are red in tooth, mind and hand. When we see drug addicts we should ask what part we have played in their addiction because that part is there.
