Recently the elections started in the UK and every day the reporters are out talking to people and following the candidates. On the day, the comments or events are given a weight by the reporters – most notably here the D Day celebrations – and made small or big immediately. There is no percolation of the events into the general public and then a report on what they think. The reporters make the decision ‘oh this was big’ and that is repeated by the public for days.
This is not the same thing as debates, or asking people how they will vote, also based on months if not years of reporting- but a decision taken by news desks. Gone are the days when someone would say ‘he left to do a TV debate’ and then wait for the public reaction.
Truly we are being led by reportage.
