There has never been a sensible conversation with the public here in the UK about how tax is spent. There is such a lot of wastage in public finances that people actually dislike paying taxes because they never think the money is going to be spent well.
The whole issue revolves around what kind of society we actually want. If we want a free health service – a much better idea than the American one – we need to pay for it and allocate a tax burden on each citizen which would equate to around 10 or 11p in the pound for everyone paying tax. That would not pay for the NHS but it would be ringed fenced. Then another few pence for an army and infrastructure. The privatisation of the railways and water has been divisive and is broken with disputes and poor service and now a poisoning.
If people knew this is what their money was spying for and it was a good service, they would begin the feel they had a tax burden that was fair to all.
