A Drug of Choice

Posted on 14/03/202414/03/2024 by Daniel

Plato thought music was a drug and dangerous and he actually wanted it limited in his perfect republic.

I have loved classical music all my life and only know popular music because it has been recommended to me or I have trawled youtube and listened to some contestants on talent shows. I am intensely aware of the tones and phrases that can release dopamine and serotonin in the brain. And I can see as I drive how differently I am awake or driving depending on the music I choose to play. Just watching people at a pop concert – minus the chemicals they take – shows how ‘other-worldly’ beat can make us feel.

It is good to have a release from stress but not is not good to be in such a space that one forgets what one did, or does things one would never otherwise do. The latter shows you need to change the way you have chosen to live.
